Start Strong: Connecting with Families from Day One

It is essential to start building relationships with your students’ families early in the school year. Why? Because if negative behaviors or challenging situations arise later, you will already have a foundation of trust and understanding. The last thing you want is to have a difficult conversation with a parent you have not taken the time to connect with.

At the beginning of the year, I send out a message to parents, thanking them for the opportunity to teach their child. I emphasize how important it is for us to work as a TEAM—Together, Everyone Achieves More—to ensure their child’s success.

While messages are helpful, there are times when an old-fashioned phone call is best. I know that in today’s world people may prefer texting, but you cannot always read tone or emotion in a message. A personal phone call shows sincerity and care, helping to strengthen your connection with families.

The key is to start early and always be authentic. Parents and students can tell when you are being genuine. Pour into your parents just as much as you do your students—many parents need encouragement and support just like the kids. Honestly, we need each other to make this journey successful.

Be blessed, remember you got this, and always WORK SMARTER... NOT HARDER!
