What Are You Focusing On?
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Mark 8:36
I was listening to a sermon recently from a pastor in Dallas, Texas, and his message truly convicted me. He talked about our soul—how easily we spend so much of our time focused on the things of this world, while often neglecting what really matters.
As I listened, I began to reflect on how often I have been guilty of putting so much energy into temporary things. Everything we can see is temporary… but what we cannot see—our soul—is eternal. Because of that, I am challenging myself, and I am presenting this to you as well: let us begin feeding and strengthening our soul just as intentionally as we pour into the things of this world.
I started asking myself: How do I do that?
By praying, reading, and meditating on the Word of God. By asking the Lord to send godly people into our lives who will sharpen us—because as my mother-in-law always reminds me, “Iron sharpens iron.”
Most importantly, it begins with pursuing a personal relationship with the Lord.
Relationships take time, effort, and desire. Think about the people who are closest to you—your relationship with them did not happen overnight. It grew through communication, intentional time, and a desire to get closer. This is exactly how the Lord desires for us to relate to Him. He will not force Himself on us. It is a choice—just like what we wear, what we eat, and what we give our attention to each day.
We must choose Him.
We must choose to focus on what is eternal.
We only get one soul, and it is more important than anything else we invest in.
So as the old song says, build your hopes on things eternal. Hold to God’s unchanging hands!
